| Set: | On the Docks; in the Workhouse; the Marringtons' living room at Christmas time. |
| Synopsis: | A family of five children have come into the town, homeless, parentless and starving through no fault of their own. They end up in the Workhouse, with their days spent working on the new railway or gutting herring. Life is so awful they decide to run away but end up in prison. Finally, with a bit of help from a gang of pickpockets, they spend Christmas with the Marrington family and the play ends with a happy Victorian Christmas, carol singing and mince pies. |
