Two Short Plays

by GADFAN MORRIS

  The Miller's Daughter
 Cast:  22 ( 12 m, 10 f + crowd).
Suggested Age Range:  9 to 12
 Approx. Running Time:  35 - 40 minutes.
 Music:  None.
Set:   The stage is divided into three playing areas:
the Royal Palace; the Miller's house; and outside.
Synopsis:  Freely based on the fairy story Rumpelstiltskin. The story teller, not always helped by his assistant, links the scenes of the familiar tale, (whose characters have become even more familiar!) and which has acquired the only sense of humour which might be associated with a miller - corny!

   The Shoemaker
 Cast:  35 ( 13 m, 14f + 8crowd [f] ).
Suggested Age Range:  9 to 12
 Approx. Running Time: 35 minutes.
 Music:  None
Set:  Three playing areas: the living room; the shop (in which there is a workbench); and the glade where the Elves live.
Synopsis:  The action is freely based on the fairy story The Elves and the Shoemaker. Much of the humour is derived from anachronic allusions. It ends in a tableau with Queen Victoria's visit to the shop. There is opportunity for considerable "comic business" involving the ten Elves.
